My approach

Personalized

There is no one-size-fits-all in dog training. Every dog is different, and every household is different! So each training process is individualized to you, your dog, and your training goals.

Comprehensive

From learning about your dog’s body language and emotions, to having a clear communication system with your dog, my training is in-depth and expands based off your training goals.

Self-paced

Dog training is not an overnight process - it takes time! So it benefits us to go at the pace you and your dog are most comfortable with, to achieve your training goals and hit new milestones with your dog.

Compassionate

Training with your dog should not be filled with conflict. I take a gentle approach, that allows you and your dog to work as a team, build a strong relationship and understanding of one another, and have fun together!

Emotions drive behavior

More about my methods

At Dogs in the Groove, I practice LIMA (Least Intrusive Minimally Aversive) training methods, mostly utilizing positive reinforcement. I focus on the emotions that drive your dog’s behavior, getting to the root of the problem through proper fulfillment and decompression, counter-conditioning, desensitization, healthy exposure to people, dogs, and the environment, as well as teaching alternative behaviors.

I do not teach leash corrections, nor do I use e-collars in behavior modification. Harsh corrections can erode trust, cause harm, and suppress behaviors. Because of this, I aim to create a fear-free and minimally stressful training environment, for you and your dog.

With that being said, I believe it is completely acceptable and normal to tell your dog “no,” as long as it’s in a kind, gentle, and effective manner, and we have taught them desired behaviors to replace their unwanted behaviors first.

Tool usage

I work with serious behavior modification cases, with dogs with big feelings, including and not limited to, reactivity, aggression, anxiety, and fear. Some clients come to me already utilizing certain tools. We will try to phase off any tools that may be causing your dog unnecessary stress as quickly as we can, if it is in the best interest of the dog, and the pet parent.

Tool usage is considered on a case by case basis, and the safety of the dog and the pet parent is heavily prioritized. The comfortability of my clients and their dogs is paramount to me, so we will not be using any tools you or your dog are uncomfortable with.

*E-collar training is available to select clients that have been through a training program with me. E-collars are only used when paired with an already learned and conditioned recall. I do not use e-collars for behavior modification of any kind, including reactivity.*
